The Most Common Window Treatment Buying Mistakes

Window treatments have had their origin with the primary motive of improving the aesthetics of the interior of the house and the room. Modern day window treatments are also one of the ways to provide for privacy as well as let natural light inside the room. Window treatments are of different types – some cover the windows that could be either made of hard material like window blinds and shades, shutters; curtains that belong to the softer materials; treatments that surround the window like using decorative or valances; and treatments that are applied directly to glass windows like frosted glass, stained glass etc.

Window treatments involve good deal of money and time, depending upon the type of window treatment chosen. However, as customers, we often make the mistake of going in for make-shift solutions to save money and time believing that the treatment would last and be as impressive as a bespoke one. Some of the common mistakes that we make while buying window treatments are –

  • The first error is choosing a window treatment that ignores safety aspects. We ignore because of lack of knowledge or to save money. While choosing a treatment whether window blinds and shades or other types, one must remember to keep security and safety factors in mind, especially if there are pets, toddlers, young children and elderly people staying in the space – studies have shown that every day, on an average, two kids in the country end up in the emergency ward of hospitals because of window blinds and cords.
  • We end up buying window treatments that are inconvenient and difficult to operate. This can be quite frustrating over a period of time. You spend money but get stuck because the treatment wouldn’t just work.
  • We often buy window treatments like window blinds and shades because we like the color or the appearance or the design or it was cheap. What we forget is that window treatments need to fit perfect with the windows. If not, they are useless and instead of enhancing the look of the place, they rather ruin the appearance. You would end up changing the blinds or treatments every second month. Applying treatments from professionals to the window means that proper measurements are taken to customize the treatment so that they fit proportionately.
  • Often in order to save money or to take credit we rush to set up the treatments ourselves. The work of a professional can never be compared with a layman because the former has the requisite training and experience to do carry out the work the proper way. Also it can be cumbersome doing the work by yourself without any training.
  • The other downside of buying off the shelf window treatments is that we do not see how the product fits with our home settings hence we are not quite sure of the ease of operation, whether it is possible to install at your windows or not, whether it lets in the required amount of natural light inside the room or not and much more
